6 steps to successfully manage an urge

  1. Recognize you’re experiencing an urge–identify it. Speak it out loud, if you can.

  2. Allow it to exist, and recognize that the urge will pass.

  3. Remind yourself that your evolved brain gets to make your decisions, and not your primal brain. What was your plan today? Choose to stick to it! Tell your primal brain to take a back seat.

  4. Move yourself away from triggers, if necessary, to ensure your success.

  5. Reward yourself. Congratulate yourself on successfully managing an urge.

  6. Write about it.
